Trend: Ankle straps

It looks like Lindsay Lohan’s ankle monitor has started a new trend: the ankle strap shoe. Ankle strap shoes are really popular for this upcoming spring/summer season- and not the dainty, feminine kind. Chunky, buckled, patterned, velvet, and metallic; as a current intern for a shoe company, it was impossible for me to ignore the astronomical influx of chunky straps on any and every shoe this season.

The good thing is if you’re into the trend, you can wear an ankle strap shoe in almost any situation. The flat sandal, the office shoe, the dress shoe, and the trendy platform heel have all incorporated this chunky ankle strap trend into their respective styles.

The bad thing is that ankle straps, especially thick ones, can make legs look shorter if not styled properly.

If you're vertically challenged and love this trend, steer clear of bottoms that hit the knee or just below it- trousers that taper right at the ankle, above the strap will flow right into the shoe and elongate the leg. Loose shorts or an A-line skirt that hit mid-thigh will also elongate the leg, and neutral colours as usual, will almost always make your legs look longer.
